The 2013 IEEE/ASME International Conference on Advanced Intelligent Mechatronics were held on July 9-12, 2013 in Wollongong. AIM 2013 conference brings together an international community of experts to discuss the state-of-the-art, new research results, perspectives of future developments, and innovative applications relevant to mechatronics, robotics, control, automation, and related areas.

AIM 2013 conference invites submissions of high quality research papers describing original work on the following topics, but not limited to: Actuators, Automotive Systems, Bioengineering, Data Storage Systems, Electronic Packaging, Fault Diagnosis, Human-Machine Interfaces, Industry Applications, Information Technology, Intelligent Systems, Machine Vision, Manufacturing, Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems, Micro/Nano Technology, Modeling and Design, Motion Vibration and Noise Control, Neural and Fuzzy Control, Opto-Electronic Systems, Prototyping, Real-Time and Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation, Robotics, Sensors, System Integration, Transportation Systems, Smart Materials and Structures, Energy Harvesting and other frontier fields of mechatronics.

The theme of the conference is “Mechatronics for Human Wellbeing”, which emphasises the significance of Mechatronics in enhancing the quality of life for society.

AIM 2013 Conference: attended by 300+ representatives from many countries such as German, India, Singapore, China and more to presents their paper. It’s a three days program included registration day and filled with an opening ceremony, three keynote speakers, two semi-plenary talk, one workshop, two tutorials sessions and three days parallel sessions. Three Plenary/ Keynote presenters have been invited to give a speech for about 45 minutes.

  • Keynote 1 has been presented by Professor Gordon Wallace [FAA, FTSE, FIOP, FRACI], ARC Centre of Excellence for Electromaterials Science, Intelligent Polymer Research Institute, University of Wollongong and the topic is about Organic Conductors and Additive Fabrication bringing new dimensions to Medical Bionics”.
  • Keynote 2 has been presented by Professor H. Harry Asada, Department Of Mechanical Engineering Massachusetts Institue Of Technology and the topic is about “Wearable Bio-Artificial Muscle Actuators”.
  • Keynote 3 has been presented by Dr. Evangelos S. Eleftheriou, IBM Fellow, Department Manager, Storage Technologies, IBM Zurich Research Laboratory, Switzerland and the topic is about “Enabling Technologies for Scanning Probe Microscopy”.

In this conference, we submitted two papers; P-Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy and PDFuzzy Controller Design for Position Control of a Modified Single Acting Pneumatic Cylinder and 3-D Finite-Element Analysis of Fiber-reinforced Soft Bending Actuator for Finger Flexion.

AIM is a good platform to promote UTM as an organizer for this conference in the future.

The 2013 Asian Control Conference (ASCC 2013)

The 2013 Asian Control Conference was held in Istanbul at the Military Museum from 23-26th June 2-13. The  Conference was attended by 300+ representatives from many countries such as German, India, Singapore, China and others

Three Plenary/ Keynote presenters have been invited to give each speech for about 45 minutes.

  • Keynote 1 has been presented by Prof Tamer Basar, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA  Title of Presentation: Multi-Agent Networked Systems with Adversarial Elements
  • Keynote 2 has been presented by Lei Guo from Chinese Academy of Sciences, China (http://lsc.amss.ac.cn/~lguo/ )
  • Keynote 3 has been presented by Ven Mareels from Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, The University of Melbourne, Melbourne, Australia with the title of Presentation: Four Millennia of Irrigation Water Management: A Systems Engineer’s Perspective

In this conference, our team member, Mr. Teh Chuan Enn, Mr. Syed Najib Syed Salim and Mrs. Hazirah Sunar were contribute two papers; Linearized Mathematical Model of Intelligent Pneumatic Actuator System: Position, Force and Viscosity Controls and Tracking Performance and Disturbance Rejection of Pneumatic Actuator System.

International Graduate Conference on Engineering, Science and Humanities (IGCESH 2013)

The 4th International Graduate Conference on Engineering, Science and Humanities, IGCESH 2013 was organized by the UTM Postgraduate Student Societies in collaboration with the School of Graduate Studies and K-Economy Research Alliance, UTM. IGCESH 2013 provides a forum for accessing the most up-to-date and authoritative knowledge from graduate student’s research findings covering both industrial and academic world’s thereby sharing best practice in the fields of Engineering, Sciences and Humanities.

The conference was held in Johor Bahru at the UTM’ N24 Building from 16-17th April, 2013.

The papers on original works are solicited on a variety of topics, including but not limited to the following conference tracks:

Our group members’ contribution was in the fourth field (Electronics, Control, Communication, and Information Technology) with a paper No. 206 titled “PI Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy and Receding Horizon Position Control for Intelligent Pnuematic Actuator”. The authors of the paper are:

It’s worth to mention that our paper in this conference was nominated to be published in Jurnal Teknologi Special Edition (Recent Research in Engineering).

International Conference on Intelligent Robotics, Automation and Manufacturing (IRAM 2012)

IRAM (Intelligent Robotics, Automation and Manufacturing) is the First International Conference on Intelligent Robotics, Automation and Manufacturing. IRAM been organized by Monash University Sunway Campus, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with support by National Instruments (NI) and Springer (CCIS series). The conference aims to bring together experts from the academic, scientific and industrial communities to address new challenges, present their latest research findings, ideas, developments and perspective of the future directions in the field of Robotics, Automation and Manufacturing.

IRAM 2012 invites high quality original research and development papers in all areas related to the conference theme. 2012 IRAM Conference: attended by 58 representatives from many countries such as German, India, Singapore and more to presents their paper. Asyraf Azman, from our group presenting a paper with the title PD-Fuzzy Logic Controller Design for Position Control of Intelligent Pneumatic Actuator System”.

In this conference, two Keynote presenters have been invited to give a speech for about 45 minutes. Keynote 1 has been presented by Prof Nilesh J Vasa, Optomechatronics Laboratory, Department of Engineering Design, IIT Madras, Chennai, India and the topic is about “Recent Advances in Laser Assisted Surface Treatment of Thin Films for Photovoltaic Applications”and keynote 2 has been presented by Mr. Chandran Nair, Managing Director, National Instruments, Singapore and the topic is about “Innovation in the Era of Graphical System Design”.

Prof Shamsudin Mohd Amin (from UTM) is one of the committees in this conference. It’s a three days program included registration day and filled with an opening ceremony, two keynote speakers and two days parallel sessions. Most of the presenters were from India.

IRAM is a good platform to promote UTM as an organizer for this conference in the future.

 

International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS 2012)

The 2012 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS 2012) is a conference that held at Hotel Tivoli Marina in Vilamoura, Algarve, Portugal in October 7-12, 2012. The theme of the conference is Robotics for Quality of Life and Sustainable Development. This edition celebrates the IROS Silver Jubilee with a series of special events included in the conference technical and social programmed – 25 Years.

In this conference, 1801 papers were submitted from 53 countries and 806 were accepted and presented in 11 Parallel sessions. Over 1535 IROS2012 attendees (including Volunteers, IEEE, Exhibitors), 646 of them are students. There are 29 Workshops and 2 Tutorials sessions with 1 free special invited workshop on EU R&D Program.

One special topic has been presented which is ‘Vision of industry leaders about the future of robotics’. In this presentation, the speaker described that personal robots are seen as a major market change for the near future, but security issues arising from the interaction of robots with common persons may be still an issue.

Our team member, En Khairuddin Osman, contribute a paper with a title System Identification Model for an Intelligent Pneumatic Actuator (IPA) System.

International Symposium on Robotics and Intelligent Sensors (IRIS 2012)

International Symposium on Robotics and Intelligent Sensors (IRIS) is an international conference dedicated to the field of robotics and sensors. IRIS was founded in Japan by Prof. Masahiro Ohka and Dr. Hanafiah Yussof in year 2010. The first IRIS2010 was successfully organized at Nagoya University, Japan on March 8-11, 2010. It was jointly organized by the Graduate School of Information Science, Nagoya University and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi MARA.

This year theme is “Smart Sensors, Smart Robots”. IRIS2012 is jointly organized by the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, UiTM, the Malaysian Robotics and Automation Interest Group (MyRAig), and the Graduate School of Information Science, Nagoya University, Japan. IRIS2012 is intended to provide technical forum and discussion related to robotics and sensors. The symposium is aimed to bring together researchers, academicians, scientists, students, engineers and practitioners to participate and present their latest findings, ideas, developments and applications related to the various aspects of robotics and sensors.

There are about 250 papers have been accepted and present in this conference. En. Khairuddin Osman, En Muhammad Asyraf Azman and En. Nu’man din Mustafa were participated and published two papers; Controller Design for Simulation Control of Intelligent Pneumatic Actuators (IPA).

Climbing and Walking Robot (CLAWAR 2012)

The international conference of climbing and walking robot 2012 was held at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore USA on July 23-26, 2012. CLAWAR Association has organized CLAWAR conference annually since 1998, mostly in Europe and Southeast Asian countries. The CLAWAR 2012 conference was organized by CLAWAR Association together with US universities and US government organization.

The event generally includes presentations from people all over the world involved in fast growing field nowadays, Mobile robotics.  I represented one of the paper from our group that was accapted in the conference, entitle “Application of New Braided Soft Actuator Design in Biomimetic Robot Locomotion”. Since I was the only participant from Malaysia, having educational experiences from various people from different country was interesting and great.  Besides attending plenary talks, other researcher conference presentations and poster presentations, there were laboratory visit at Johns Hopkins University. Participating laboratories were Laboratory for Computational Sensing and Robotics and the Locomotion in Mechanical and Biological Systems Lab.

The IEEE/ASME International Conference on Advanced Intelligent Mechatronics (AIM) is an offspring of the flagship Mechatronics journal, IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics, inaugurated in 1997. The purpose of AIM 2012, following the footsteps of the previous editions, is to promote activities in various areas of mechatronics by providing a forum for exchange of ideas, presentation of technical achievements and discussion of future directions. The AIM brings together an international community of experts to discuss the state-of-the-art, new research results, perspectives of future developments, and innovative applications relevant to mechatronics, robotics, control, automation, and related areas.

During AIM2012, our group have presented two papers which are “Nonlinear Mathematical Model of an Intelligent Pneumatic Actuator (IPA) Systems: Position and Force Controls” and “Development of Bending Soft Actuator with Different Braided Angles”. The conference was held on July 11-14, 2012 at Ambassador Hotel in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

Ketua Projek membentang kertas kerja

Seminar AIM merupakan antara seminar persidangan antarabangsa dalam bidang Mekatronik yang terkenal selain dari persidangan IROS dan ICRA. Persidangan di Hungary merupakan persidangan yang ke 8 dianjurkan oleh 3 pertubuhan besar dalam bidang kejuruteraan iaitu IEEE, ASME dan ICS.

Pembentangan kertas kerja bertajuk ‘Stiffness and Viscous Coefficient characteristics for Ergonomics Chair Design’ telah dibentang dengan jayanya. Beberapa peserta persidangan berminat dengan projek dan juga bertanyakan tentang ‘patern’ dan sebagainya.

Lawatan ke makmal robotik

 

Ketua Projek turut mengambil kesempatan melawat makmal penyelidikan robotik bagi berkongsi maklumat dan pengalaman.

Maklumat dan pengalaman yang diperoleh dalam penyertaan persidangan AIM dan lawatan tersebut sangat bermanfaat dan perlu dikongsikan untuk rujukan staf dan pelajar-pelajar. Selain itu penglibatan staf dalam persidangan antarabangsa perlu digiatkan untuk tujuan jaringan (networking) serta mengetahui teknologi up-to-date dalam bidang penyelidikan yang dijalankan.
